How to Use Condoms Properly?

How to Use Condoms Properly?

A condom is the most basic thing we should remember every time we have sex. Regardless of the type of sex or gender, if there's physical contact, remember to practice safe sex. A responsible approach protects us from unwanted consequences the next day. However, this topic is often overlooked, so we're here to explain it clearly and thoroughly.

Step by Step: How to Put on a Condom

1. Check the packaging

  • Make sure the condom is not expired – the expiration date is printed on the package.
  • Check if the foil is damaged – any tear means it's unusable.
  • Gently press the package – the air inside should resist (a sign it's not punctured).

2. Open the package… carefully

  • Don't use teeth, scissors, or fingernails – the condom can be easily damaged.
  • Tear the foil open with your fingers along the serrated edges.

3. Determine the right side

Gently unroll the condom between your fingers – the tip should point upwards, and the edges should roll down easily.

4. Put it on an erect penis

  • The penis should be hard and dry – too much lube may cause the condom to slip off.
  • Pinch the tip of the condom to remove air (space for semen).
  • Use your other hand to roll the condom all the way down to the base.

5. Add lubricant (if needed)

  • If the condom isn’t already lubricated, you can apply lubricant on the outside – it improves glide and comfort.
  • Don’t use oil-based lubes with latex condoms – they can break the material down!
  • Use only water- or silicone-based lubes with latex.

How to Remove a Condom?

After ejaculation:

  1. Withdraw the penis while still erect, holding the condom at the base – this prevents it from slipping off inside.
  2. Carefully remove the condom, making sure not to spill semen.
  3. Tie a knot, wrap in tissue, and throw it in the trash (never the toilet!).
  4. Wash your penis and hands – it’s not overkill, it’s hygiene.

Practical Condom Tips

  • Always use a new condom when switching orifices (e.g. from anus to vagina).
  • One condom = one use. Never try to reuse it.
  • Don’t wear two at once. That’s not extra protection – it increases the risk of tearing.
  • Use condoms with sex toys too – especially when switching partners or during anal play.
  • Carry one with you if you expect sex might happen. Contrary to myths, keeping it in a wallet too long can damage it – store in a cool, dry place.

When Can a Condom Slip or Tear?

  • If it’s put on incorrectly (e.g. without squeezing the air out of the tip).
  • If it’s expired or stored improperly (e.g. in heat).
  • If it’s too tight or too loose – fit matters!
  • If damaged by fingernails, rings, etc.
  • If the wrong lube is used (e.g. oily lotion, coconut oil, etc.).

What If the Condom Breaks?

  1. Stay calm – don’t panic.
  2. If ejaculation happened inside – wash the genital area as soon as possible (but don’t douche the vagina/anus) – this can increase the risk of infection.
  3. Within 72 hours you can take the morning-after pill or PEP (post-exposure HIV prophylaxis) – ideally, consult a doctor or testing center.
  4. Take STI tests after a few weeks – even if there are no symptoms.

Safe Sex = Peace of Mind!

Using condoms is simple but requires care and attention. Proper application, using the right lube, choosing the right size, and maintaining hygiene – all of this ensures the condom works as it should: to protect and provide comfort. It can also be part of foreplay, intimacy, or even a fetish. But above all, it’s about safety for both of you!
